Thanksgiving Travel Stats

as mentioned by Kathy Nicholson on Sunday November 30, 2008

Sunday After Thanksgiving is Heaviest Travel Day of the Year
The most traveled day of the holiday period - and of the entire year - is the Sunday after Thanksgiving, when 13.7 million long-distance trips are made (Figure 2). The day after Christmas is the second most traveled day during the holidays, with 12 million trips. New Year's Eve is less traveled than either Christmas or Thanksgiving, with 8.3 million people traveling. There appears to be no increased pattern of travel associated with the celebration of Hanukkah.

While Christmas and Thanksgiving record about the same amount of travel, Thanksgiving's high volume of travel is concentrated in fewer days, which places a heavier burden on the transportation system. During the five days surrounding Thanksgiving, an average of 10.8 million trips are taken per day, nearly double the average number of daily trips for the whole year; the daily average for the five days around Christmas is 9.5 million trips, but more Christmas travelers leave earlier and stay longer than Thanksgiving travelers so that trips are spread out over a longer period of time.

New Year's is a less traveled five-day holiday period, because the first few days of the New Year are relatively light travel days. During the five days surrounding New Year's Day, Americans take an average of 6.3 million trips per day.

Holiday travel accounts for 8.3 percent of all trips and 9.8 percent of all miles traveled during the year. Trips taken during the five-day periods around Thanksgiving and Christmas account for 6.3 percent of America's annual trips and 6.8 percent of the miles. The five-day period around New Year's Day accounts for 2.1 percent of all annual trips and 3 percent of miles.

WRAF Church of the Week - November 24, 2008

LifePoint Church of Greenville, SC is the latest WRAF "Church of the Week."

Congratulations to Pastor Phil Pike and the entire congregation of LifePoint.

Linda nominated the church and shared the following: "Our church is a little over 5 years old. We are a very small, but loving church that seeks to know God and to make Him known not only in our community, but to those in other parts of the world.

We are attempting to reach our local community by each member of the body reaching out to his/her neighbors and those that we come into contact with, with love, caring and sharing Christ.

We are attempting to reach those in other parts of the world through our Lifepoint website.

We have been taught that it is not just the pastor's responsibility to minister, but it is also the responsibility of each member in the body of Christ, and what a joy it is to do just that. Phil Pike is our pastor; he has a great heart for the Lord. Phil initially created our website. We have since had two men to join our church family whom God had gifted in the area of computer technology etc. They have tweaked our website enabling us to reach thousands of people in other countries with the message of God's love and salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Even though we are small, we are planning a missions trip next year to minister face to face with people in other parts of the world. We also had the priviledge of sending over 100 study Bibles to some of our soldiers in Iraq.

Last year, before winter set in, we had the priviledge of giving out over 300 blankets to the homeless. Also, last year during the spring and summer months we held monthly picnics with the hopes of reaching out to paper in the park by way of giving out free bottled water and having fun games that they could join in on. Our efforts there was to forge relationships so that we could share Christ with those that did not know him. I am reminded of the widow that gave all she had to the Lord.

Though we are a small church, we at Lifepoint desire to give all we have to be used as vessels of honor for his kingdom. Thank you for this opportunity to share how God is using this small body for his glory."

Jazzy Mashed Potatoes

recipe mentioned by Kathy Nicholson

5 pound bag Yukon Gold Potatoes
1 stick (real) butter
1 cup milk
thyme
chives
1 bulb garlic
olive oil
salt and pepper

Yukon Golds are the best choice for making creamy mashed potatoes and most potatoe gratins and casserole-type dishes. You will need about 4 pounds or about 12 potatoes (5-6 ounces each) for 12 servings (about 2/3 cup per serving). Whip up the oooked potatoes with 1 cup of milk (or half-and-half), 1 stick of butter, salt and pepper to taste.

To dress it up: place a whole bulb of garlic on a double layer of foil. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Wrap it in the foil and place in the oven 1 hour before the turkey is ready. When garlic is soft, add any jices that accumated in the bottom to the cooked potatoes. Squeeze the softened garlic into the potatoes along with some butter and milk add fresh chopped thyme or chives.

Turkey Roasting Instructions

Remember the basics when cooking turkey

Cooking a turkey can seem daunting, but it's simply a matter of following directions and watching your food thermometer.

What? You don't have a thermometer?

OK, that's the first - and, essentially only - thing you need to buy, along with the turkey. The thermometer is key when cooking, as it ensures a safe minimum internal temperature of 165 F has been reached to destroy bacteria and prevent foodborne illness.

Otherwise, follow the instructions below for a delicious - and safe - turkey dinner for Thanksgiving this year.

Roasting instructions

Set the oven temperature no lower than 325 F. Preheating is not necessary.
Be sure the turkey is completely thawed. Times are based on fresh or thawed birds at a refrigerator temperature of 40 F or below.
Place turkey breast-side up on a flat wire rack in a shallow roasting pan 2 to 2 1/2 inches deep.
Tuck wing tips back under shoulders of bird (called "akimbo"). (optional)
Add one-half cup water to the bottom of the pan. (optional)
A tent of aluminum foil may be placed loosely over the breast of the turkey for the first 1 to 1 1/2 hours, then removed for browning. Or, a tent of foil may be placed over the turkey after the turkey has reached the desired golden brown color. (optional)
For optimum safety, cook stuffing in a casserole dish as a dressing. If you decide to stuff your turkey, mix ingredients just before stuffing it; stuff loosely. Additional time is required for the turkey and stuffing to reach a safe minimum internal temperature (see chart).
For safety and doneness, the internal temperature should be checked with a food thermometer. The temperature of the turkey and the center of the stuffing must reach a safe minimum internal temperature of 165 F. Many people may choose to cook to 180 F to ensure that the meat is not pink and is well done. Check the temperature in the innermost part of the thigh and wing and the thickest part of the breast.
Let the bird stand 20 minutes before removing stuffing and carving.

Possible turkey pitfalls

Many variables can affect the roasting time of a whole turkey:

A partially frozen turkey requires longer cooking
A stuffed turkey requires longer cooking
The oven may heat food unevenly or may be inaccurate
Dark roasting pans cook faster than shiny metals
The depth and size of the pan can reduce heat circulation to all areas of the turkey
The use of a foil tent for the entire time can slow cooking
Use of the roasting pan's lid speeds cooking
An oven cooking bag can accelerate cooking time
The rack position can have an effect on even cooking and heat circulation
A turkey or its pan may be too large for the oven, thus blocking heat circulation
Unstuffed breast

4 to 6-pound breast: 1 1/2 to 2 1/4 hours
6 to 8-pound breast: 1/4 to 3 1/4 hours
8 to 12 pounds: 2 3/4 to 3 hours
12 to 14 pounds: 3 to 3 3/4 hours
14 to 18 pounds: 3 3/4 to 4 1/4 hours
18 to 20 pounds: 4 1/4 to 4 1/2 hours
20 to 24 pounds: 4 1/2 to 5 hours
Stuffed breast

8 to 12 pounds: 3 to 3 1/2 hours
12 to 14 pounds: 3 1/2 to 4 hours
14 to 18 pounds: 4 to 4 1/4 hours
18 to 20 pounds: 4 1/4 to 4 3/4 hours
20 to 24 pounds: 4 3/4 to 5 1/4 hours

WRAF Church of the Week - November 17, 2008

Darrel nominated the church and told us:

"Number one, we are Roman Catholic. That in itself is special because there are not that many Catholic Churches up here in the mountains.

I listen to your station every day, you do a great job. However, I hardly hear mention of a Catholic Church. So, I wanted to let you know our church serves our community and impacts it by supplying food and clothing to the poor and hungry, and one of our ministries pays bills for those who cannot. The last Thursday of every month, we provide a grocery box full of food to anyone in our community who will come by and receive. You can imagine how may people that can be when 51% of the people in our county live below the poverty line. Feeding, clothing and paying bills for the unfortunate and poor. That is what we are all about.

We also run a thrift store providing donated items at low low prices for all shoppers. We are totally committed to our community. I'm a former Major League Baseball Player who moved up here from Atlanta 11 years ago. I give my testimony at churches all the time. Many call me a Babolic! My point is I've been in many, many churches and seen many, many ministries at work.

St. Paul's is special and I wanted to try and see if you folks would recognize us. You can contact me anytime for further discussion. Keep up the great work on the radio! In His Grip! Darrel Chaney."

WRAF Church of the Week - November 10, 2008

Main Street United Methodist Church in Abbeville, SC is the latest WRAF "Church of the Week."

Patricia nominated Main Street, and she tells us that MSUMC "offers Christ centered teaching and worship services. Although it is a relatively small congregation, it is very involved in community service with other churches in the United Christian Ministries of Abbeville County.

Its members are volunteer leaders and workers who contribute time and money to help those in need in our county. We are involved in Habitat, support Missionaries in Africa and a sister church in Haiti. We recently gave money to send a large number of Haiti children to school. We volunteer and financially support the Tracy Jackson Summer Food Program in Abbeville County. We provide Thanksgiving food boxes for many families in the county. On Thanksgiving and Christmas Days we provide the place for another volunteer group to serve and carryout dinners for the needed. At Christmas time we adopt hundreds of children in our county with our Angel Tree Effort, buying, wrapping and delivering clothes and toys to those in need.

My husband and I came to Main Street after retiring from 45 years in the ministry. We have served many churches, but this is the most unselfish church we have ever known. I can't imagine what this community would do without the Christian love of this little church.

It has been so spiritually rewarding to be a part of this congregation. Our pastor Randy Taylor has inspired us and led us to follow Christ's Word, "When you have done it unto the least of these, my brethren, you have done it unto me.'"

WNEG will offer broad regional coverage of all local races within the Northeast Georgia area on Election Day. The evening coverage will feature political commentators and live updates from throughout the region. An hour-long election special covering local, state and national coverage will air at 10 p.m.

“Television viewers in Northeast Georgia have long relied on WNEG-TV for accurate and timely broadcast and on-line coverage of news important to their lives. We are thrilled that with the added resources from the University of Georgia WNEG will be able to deliver the convenience of a 10pm newscast produced to meet their lifestyles and interests,” said Jimmy Sanders, Station Manager for WNEG-TV.

“The election coverage reflects the commitment of the university and the Grady College to the communities and people of Northeast Georgia,” said Cully Clark, dean of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. “We plan on many more such projects as we continue to grow the station.”

The University of Georgia Research Foundation entered into an agreement with Media General, parent company of WNEG-TV, to acquire its assets. The University took actual possession of the station October 15th.

WRAF Church of the Week - November 3, 2008

Calvary Chapel in Athens, GA has been selected as the latest WRAF "Church of the Week."

Ben Slaboda is the Senior Pastor of Calvary Chapel of Athens. The church was planted in the late summer of 1998 and began as a home fellowship. Pastor Ben was a " child of the sixties" and came to Christ in 1973 in southern California while living a communal lifestyle.

Brenda, who nominated her church, says Calvary "is a non-denominational church, that welcomes everyone. Pastor Ben is a wonderful teacher leading us verse by verse thorough the Bible. Our church cares about the community thorough many outreach programs in the community and through missionary trips. Our church was established in 1998 here in Athens. Everyone here is so caring and always gives a great big hug.
