Church of the Week - September 29, 2008

Congratulations to Pastor Rudy Gray and everyone at UBC on this selection.
Gerri nominated UBC and shared that; "Utica is a loving Bible teaching church. Reaches out to surrounding community to bring children to AWANA programs, VBS, Good News Club. Reaches out to world through sending missionaries to all part of world and to surrounding states and is great financial supporter of Lottie Moon Missions offering. UBC has active ministries that equip God's people to be able to minister to those in their homes and communities. My husband and I have been members for 1 1/2 years after retiring from Ohio. We spent 6 diligent months visiting places of worship and because of the plain, pure teaching of God's word He led us to Utica. The music is a mixture of hymns and contemporary each Sunday and truly prepares the heart to receive God's word. We are grateful for what we are learning and are excited to congregate with the saints at Utica to worship and learn together each time we have opportunity, including Sunday evening."
Nominate your church today to be the next “WRAF Church of the Week.”

Eagles Sports Update
Women’s Soccer
The ladies have not yet entered the winners circle this year, but have on three occasions come so close. This past week the Eagles played host to Southern Wesleyan and Southeastern University. The Wesleyan contest was played to a 1 – 1 score at half, but the visitors took control after 10 minutes into the second half to put a 6 – 1 defeat on the Eagles.
Southern Wesleyan was the first to score, with 39 minutes on the clock they took a 1 – 0 lead, but the Eagles were not to be denied, as 13 minutes later Mel Miner tied the score at 1 – 1. That was to be the only goal for TFC. The second half started well for the Eagles as they had several chances to score and when Rachelle Albright missed an opening shot, and the visitors broke away for their third goal and a 3 – 1 lead you could see the momentum move to the Wesleyan side of the field.
Wesleyan came into the contest with a 3 – 0 record, beating Montreat College 5 – 0, Atlanta Christian College 9 – 0, and Auburn of Montgomery 2 – 1. Coach Bowman believes Wesleyan is one of the better teams the Eagles will face this year. If the Eagles can play with the intensity they did in the first 55 minutes of the game, then they will begin seeing the circle where winners end up.
The next home game saw Southeastern University, last season’s Region Champions, take a heart break win over the Eagles in a hard fought game ending in a 2 – 1 loss. The game was played with the visitors having a strong offensive presence and the Eagles showing their strength on the defensive side of the field. This was certainly indicative of the low score.
Southeastern took the lead late in the first half with just 7:50 left on the clock, as both teams played well, but neither could penetrate the other’s defense. However, early in the second half Toccoa Falls scored to bring it to a 1 – 1 tie. Jessica Khoury scored with an assist by Ashley Jordon and with a little help from Danae Martin who started it with the initial pass to Ashley.
Both teams continued to play well and neither was able to score until Southeastern with less than six minutes left in the game scored to take a 2 – 1 lead. Still Toccoa Falls continued to stay on the attacked and Ashley Jordon on a direct kick hit the crossbar to just miss tying the score 2
Arri Hotalen at goalie had another good game with over 13 saves in the second half alone. Others to contribute on the defensive side of the field were Danae Martin, Ashley Jordon, Tasha Nickerson and Ashley Ziegler. Tasha had the challenge of tagging Southeastern’s All- American, Deb Kennedy, who was denied on several occasions from scoring due to Tasha’s play.
Coach Bowman knows the important thing now is for the team to realize their potential and to know each game brings experience to a team that can still achieve some high goals.
Men’s Soccer
The Eagles took on Columbia International University and came away with their first win, 7 - 0. The team played an aggressive type game, with a strong defensive effort and unselfish play on the offense as several players had chances to score.
There were 5 players who would score this afternoon for the Eagles, with David Brown scoring twice, and David Eckman, Jonathan Yang, Sam Hamilton, Evan Strouse and Logan Ferrell each with one score.
Columbia was taken out of the contest early as the Eagles took a 2 – 0 lead within minutes of the game and yet more could have been on the board as TFC controlled the offensive side of the field giving the visitors little time to rest. Columbia had a couple of opportunities to put up a score, but Travis Julian with the help of his friends denied the visitors any points on the board.
This was a game that provided the Eagles the chance to play several players and showcase what their offense is capable of doing. The next opponent will be Piedmont College, another team that has a soccer tradition of playing well.
Cross Country
The team’s second meet of the year was a tri-meet against Johnson Bible College and Kentucky Christian University, with the Eagles tying Johnson Bible and beating Kentucky Christian. The meet was scheduled for an 8K, but due to bad weather the day before, the distance was reduced to a 3 mile run. Chris Leamon of Toccoa Falls led all runners with a time of 18:46, which he accomplished with a sprint to the finish and defeating Johnson’s runner by a second. Zack Bethea finished 6th with a time of 20:44 and Elliott Strouse ran 20:51 and placed 7th. Toccoa Falls and Johnson Bible both had scores of 34 and Kentucky Christian finished with a score of 59.
Coach Garside has been impressed with the work the team has been doing and the improvement over last week’s race. The long trip to Knoxville, hot weather and the muddy conditions were obstacles the team overcame, but may prove to be an environment that the Eagles could face again as the season goes into November.
The women were in a dual meet with Kentucky Christian, as Johnson Bible did not field a women’s team. The Lady Eagles defeated Kentucky 17 to 47 with a dominate performance by the Toccoa runners. The first four places going to Toccoa Falls. Anna Slifka continues to perform well and had the first place from the beginning to the end. Anna’s time was 23:05, in the second spot was Kathleen Ogden, with a time of 25:47; third was Layla Ledbetter with 27:00; and fourth place went to Anna Hunter with 27:17.
The pace for both races was slow due to the weather and conditions of the field, but the team was excited about the win and look forward to the meet with Southern Wesleyan on September 27th.
Golf
The Eagles opened there golf schedule with the Piedmont Invitational, held at The Creek Golf Course at Hard Labor. What a difference a year makes as TFC shot a team low of 322, which was 44 strokes better than last year at this time. Leading the first round for the Eagles was Patrick Emery, a sophomore from Hilton Head, with a score of 75. This placed Patrick at 5th place overall among the 50 golfers that were representing 10 colleges. Completing the round for the Eagles was; Evan Rider, formerly of Stephens County High School with an 80; Tyler Spence shooting an 81; Corey Wade and Peter Ervin with an 86.
The second round the team did not fair as well shooting an overall score of 332. The leading scorers for this round were senior Corey with a 77 and Patrick shooting an 82, which placed him 20th on the list of low total for the tournament.
According to Coach Sanders the highlights from the tournament came from the low total of the first round; Patrick’s low 75 on day one; Evan’s 80 as a freshmen and his first college tournament; senior Corey coming back with a 77; and the overall scores from several players. For the Eagles to qualify for Nationals it is important that they score low and this first tournament is a good start for the team.

WRAF Church of the Week
Holly, who nominated the church, tells us; "The hunger for the presence of God and the desire to be drawn into the Father's heart are obvious at FoLP. Our amazingly anointed worship team ministers through Scripture-based songs. We also have a Praise Dance team that moves in intercessory and prophetic worship. Our pastor, his wife, and the rest of FoLP's leadership have such a tender heart for the flock. The web site quotes, 'A place of worship, unity, training, outreach, refuge and refreshing.' I can certainly attest that this is not just some text on a page. It's a real, vibrant, family, loving reality."

Pastor Roger Bourgeois has been married to Beth since 1965 and they have two godly sons, two beautiful daughter-in-laws and three incredible grand-daughters.
Pastor Roger and his wife, Beth, established Fellowship of Living Praise on October 2, 1988 and he has been the senior pastor ever since then.

Toccoa Falls Eagle Sports Review
The Lady Eagles played host to Warren Wilson, and played well, but still came up short as the visitors defeated the Eagles 2 – 1 in what was a close game until the end. The half time score was 1 – 0 in favor of Warren Wilson and in the second half, moments after the start, Toccoa Falls tied the score. The score remained tied until late in the second half, with Wilson scoring the final goal with less than 17 minutes in the game.
Coach Bowman felt the Eagles had played well, yet with new faces on the squad and less experience there was a letdown at times and that’s when Warren Wilson took advantage of the situation. Bowman said, “We were in control of at least 75% of game, but it was in that 25% range when we lost our focus and they made the best out of our mistakes.”
The play of Jessica Khoury, Danae Martin, Mel Miner, Megan Pasquariello and Arri Hotalen was outstanding. Jessica scored her second goal of the season, with an assist from Mel. Danae and Megan played well in mid-field and Arri had 10 saves on 12 goal attempts by Warren Wilson.
The Eagles still have not played an opponent in the region, and will face xxx on September 11. This is an away game. Still without a win, the coaching staff continues to be optimistic about the season and recognizes that much of the success for this year rests on what the Eagles can do against region competition.
Men’s Soccer
The men’s soccer team played their second game against Southern Wesleyan with the results of the game much like the first. The score in both games was 0 – 5, and brings Tocc
oa Falls’ record to 0 – 2. However, Coach Mattison is still encouraged with the play of his players and believes the Eagles will bounce back from the two losses. According to Mattison, Southern Wesleyan will be one of the better teams they will face this season. What the Eagles have to do now is to not be discouraged with these games, and to build on the experience of playing quality programs. The encouragement with the game was in the play of two freshmen who have demonstrated they are able to complete against a tough opponent. Eric Bill and Logan Ferrell played above their freshmen status in the second half and will only improve as the season progresses. The play of TFC’s youth continues to be the phase that will certainly change as the season goes along. This is especially true regarding the offensive side of the game. Like most teams, it is always easier for the defensive side to get ahead of the offense. This is the case with the Eagles as they have four new players on offense. The first two games have not provided the TFC with many opportunities to score as they have been shut-out in both games.
In the second half of the Wesleyan game, the Eagles played much better, holding them to two scores, with much better play from the mid-field players. One of the players that have caught the eye of Coach Mattison is Peter Yang. This young player was not going to start, but an injury to Evan Strouse has given Peter the opportunity to play and he has played well.
On September 6th the Eagles played Southeastern University of Lakeland, reigning champions of the Southern Region last year. Toccoa Falls fell to a 3 – 4 score, losing in the final minutes of the game after taking the lead in the second half.
In the first 10 minutes of the game Toccoa Falls fell behind 2 – 0. In the next 35 minutes the Eagles out played the visitors and tied the score at 2 – 2. Scoring for the TFC was Sam Hamilton, assisted by Jonathan Yang and the second goal was scored by David Eckman, with Blake Wasson getting the assist.
Within the first 10 minutes of the second half the Eagles took the lead as David Eckman scored his second goal of the game along with Jonathan Yang getting his second assist. Soon after the Eagles scored the visitors put up another score to tie the game at 3 – 3. Then with 13 minutes left, a penalty kick was given to Southeastern on what some felt was a call that could have gone either way. On a kick in the penalty box the ball hit one of the Eagles on the elbow and was called a hand ball, giving Southeastern a free kick. According to Coach Mattison, it was a call that he has seen ignored at times since it was apparent our player did not do it intentionally.
The game was well played and some of the bright spots for the Eagles was their attitude of not giving up after the first 10 minutes of the game, but rather coming back to bring it to a tie before half; then taking the lead in the second half.
Coach Mattison feels “the offense seems to be catching up to the defense, and if the players will continue to focus on their improvement and not get discouraged we can begin to win”. The first 10 minutes are minutes the Eagles would like to have had back, as after Southeastern scored those first two goals, TFC played much better and had their chances for the victory. The key to this game is that the Eagles did have their opportunity to win and stayed with the region school that would probably get the vote of being champions again. However, the Eagles will be working to prevent that from happening.
Volleyball
The Eagles volleyball team went to their annual North – South Shootout, which was held at Kissimmee Civic Center, hosted by Florida Christian College. The Eagles came away from the weekend with a 3 – 2 record, and now hold a 4 – 4 season record after the Florida trip. The TFC volleyballers opened up against the NCCAA National Champions, Clearwater Christian, and did not begin the tourney as they had hoped. The sets were 3 – 0, with Clearwater taking all three by scores of 6 – 25, 14 – 25 and 20 – 25. The only ray of sunshine in the match was the improvement of the scores as the Eagles played. The first set was certainly dominated by Clearwater, yet the next two sets saw the Eagles improve against a much stronger opponent.
The second match was against Southeastern University, and still the sets went against the Eagles, yet 18 – 25, 21 – 25, and 20 – 25.more improvement was evident along the way. The sets for this match were Southeastern along with Clearwater were both at the National Tournament last year, with Southeastern coming in 4th. The South Region would be considered by everyone to be the toughest region in volleyball.
Highlights for TFC were Christine Kennedy with 21 defensive digs; and Caroline Johnson with 20 defensive digs and 10 kills. Coach Slate was encouraged as the scores indicate that with hard work and improvement from the 6 new players on the squad, the Eagles can certainly compete against a team invited to the national tournament.
The third match saw the Eagles turn the tide as they took three in a row from Florida Christian, from Kissimmee, with scores of 25 – 6, 25 – 17, and 25 – 12. It was good to have the chance to dominate a team, and allow for everyone to see action. The leaders in the match for the Eagles were Carol Merritt with 12 defensive digs; Christine Kennedy with 8 kills; the team having 12 service aces and 30 kills.
The next match saw TFC again win three sets with scores of 25 – 21, 25 – 19, and 25 – 18. The opponent for this match was Trinity College of Tampa. Coach Slate was pleased with the overall effort of each member of the team and praised the play of Christine Kennedy, Caroline Johnson, and Kaylyn Roedding with 16, 15 and 18 defensive digs respectfully. Also, Christine, Caroline and Becca Bowen had 8 kills each.
The final opponent for TFC was Trinity Baptist College, out of Jacksonville. The Eagles again took three in a row with scores of 25 – 16, 25 – 20, and 25 – 16. Carol Merritt again led the team in kills with 10 and the total defensive digs for the Eagles being 47. The number of digs certainly point to the Eagles playing a tough defense, which appears to be a strength of Toccoa Falls this year.
The volleyball record stands at 4 – 4, and the even though the Eagles lost the first two matches of the tournament, it was a good trip. It was a trip the team can build on and it was discovered they could compete with one of the top teams in the region.
Cross Country
The first meet the Eagles participated in was against Division I and II schools of the NCAA. Colleges represented in the meet were: Clemson, Furman, Davidson, Mars Hill, King College, Erskine, Newberry, and others of like quality. The Eagles were of course against competition the many would say was beyond our league, but the opportunity to run and the experience one gets from such competition can be extremely helpful.
Coach Garside was able to identify areas where work needs to improve, and was not in the least discouraged with the results. Chris Leamon ran an average 6:07 per mile with a 30:20 race time. This brought him in at 146 with 311 runners competing in the field. Second in for TFC was Elliot Strouse with a run of 32:40 and third was Zach Bethea with 32:59. Our third best runner, Nate Woddard had to drop out of the race with an injured knee.
The women also had a similar experience, as they competed against the same colleges as the men. Anna Slifka had an excellent run, finishing with a 21:13 time and an average of 6:50 over the 3.1 mile race. Out of 158 runners, Anna finished 32nd and has demonstrated she will be one of the NCCAA best runners this year. In the second spot for Toccoa was Kathleen Ogden finishing with a 7:52 average, close behind her was Anna Hunter and Layla Ledbetter with times of 8:15 and 8:20.
The Eagles will race Johnson Bible College this weekend and this meet help demonstrate where TFC is compared to other NCCAA schools.

Georgia Disaster Relief
ATLANTA (GA) - During disaster recovery efforts volunteers provide crucial assistance that allows first responders to focus on the most fragile members of our society. The most effective way to become a volunteer is by registering with a statewide program such as the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) or the Georgia Nurse Alert system through SERVGA (pronounced serve Georgia.)
Volunteers of all skills levels and backgrounds are needed during emergency response. Whether you are a licensed or certified health care provider, an administrative specialist, a retired professional or just an individual willing to help during a disaster, the Georgia Division of Public Health invites you to register in www.servga.gov.
“Register with Serve Georgia to save lives. A registry of volunteers allows us to contact volunteers and match the best person to the specific assistance needed,” said Sandra Elizabeth Ford, M.D., M.B.A., F.A.A.P., Acting Director of the Georgia Division of Public Health.
SERVGA is Georgia’s State Emergency Registry of Volunteers; it is administered by the Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Public Health, Office of Preparedness.
The www.servga.gov online registration form allows volunteers to include their licenses and certifications, language skills, and types of jobs or tasks they can contribute to disaster recovery efforts.
SERVGA integrates local, regional, statewide volunteers programs to assist emergency response and public safety organizations during a disaster. It is part of a national initiative to coordinate and mobilize volunteers to respond to all types of emergencies.
Individuals wishing to volunteer who are members of or have received training through the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) should directly contact their local MRC coordinator. People who are American Red Cross (ARC) certified should contact their local ARC chapter.

TFC Eagle Sports Review
Toccoa Falls College Sports UpdateWomen - Soccer
The season for men and women’s soccer and volleyball got underway this weekend. The days of pre-season practice are over and now the hours of long days in the hot sun and workouts in the gym will bring about the success each coach and team hopes to achieve.
The opening game for the women’s soccer team had to be moved from a home-opener to an away game for the Eagles. Montreat College was originally scheduled for home, but due to the heavy rains Stephens County went through last week, the game was moved to Asheville, NC. As expected, this first game for the women would be a tough start, with Montreat being a member of the NAIA and their players on scholarship. However, the Eagles performed well, were ahead at half-time only to lose in the last 15 minutes when Montreat scored their second goal and beating Toccoa Falls 2-1. This was Montreat’s second game in less than a week, coming in with a win over Emmanuel and now carrying a 2-0 record after Toccoa’s visit.
The Eagles controlled the first half of the contest and played well throughout the game. The second half was the difference as the Eagles hit the wall with fatigue and some inexperience at this point. The play of Megan Pasquariello, sweeper for the Eagles and Arri Hotalen, who played goalie with 6 saves for the day were outstanding according to Coach Russ Bowman. The only score for the Eagles came from Jessica Khoury, when a shot on goal by Jessica was mishandled by Montreat’s goalie, and then on her follow-up Jessica was able to kick the first score of the season for the Eagles. Those in attendance felt from the start it was an exciting contest and both teams played well.
Last season when Toccoa played Montreat the score was 7 – 1 with Montreat handling the Eagles easily, however this year the game was in doubt until late in the second half. Coach Bowman was pleased with the overall play of his team and believes he can build on this game for a better future. It was also discussed about having moved the game to Asheville late this week and what could have been a difference if Toccoa had the opportunity of playing at home. There is of course always an advantage when you have the chance to play in front your home crowd in surroundings that are familiar. TFC’s next home game is with Warren Wilson College on Saturday, September 6th at 2:00 PM.
Volleyball
TFC volleyball also began their season away from home this weekend and returning home with more experience and also an assurance of good things ahead.
Their first match was with Agnes Scott, of Decatur, that is a member of the NCAA III and would be considered in a higher association than the Eagles. TFC won three straight sets, 25-19, 26-24 and 25-20, winning the match 3-0. The turning point in this match occurred in the second set when the score was at 20-24, Agnes Scott ahead. However at this point the Eagles went on to score 6 straight points to take the set 26-24. Looking at the play of Toccoa Falls, this seems to have been the scoring run to set the tone for the rest of the match. If the Eagles would not have made the run, the sets would have been even, and bringing some confidence to the Agnes Scott players. Yet TFC was not going to be denied in winning the match with service aces by Christine Kennedy; 23 defensive digs by Carol Merritt, and 21 digs by Caroline Johnson. Others to make big plays for TFC were Becca Bowen with 4 defensive blocks; Danielle Estes with 29 set assists and Kayla Peters with 3 service aces.
This was an excellent start for the “Lady Volleyballers”, and according to Coach Kenny Slate the coaching staff was pleased by the play and leadership of the returners as well as the depth the team now has in the new players on the squad.
The second match, which was played the following day, Saturday, had a different outcome, but none the less there continued to be a positive feeling about the team. The Eagles played Covenant College, a NAIA college with scholarships. Toccoa Falls lost in three straight sets, 14-25, 15-25 and 15-25. Covenant was the much taller team, with aggressive play and more skilled players than the Eagles. According to Coach Slate, they were just a better team than TFC and proved it in the match. Yet despite the scores, the Eagles never quit playing hard, and continue to improve over last year’s squad.
Christine Kennedy and Becca Bowan continued their good offensive play and Danielle Estes had 16 assists for the match.
The third match was against Tennessee Wesleyan, also a member of the NAIA and joins Covenant in their conference. Yet the Eagles played better against a stronger opponent. The scores were 19-25,19-25 and 14-25. The last set of the match was played with TFC just running out of steam. There were 7 service errors in the final set, meaning points were given off serves by the Eagles that Wesleyan did not have to return.
Becca Bowen had two single blocks and again Danielle led the team in set assists with 19. Danielle is a sophomore and demonstrated this weekend to be a valuable piece of the puzzle as it relates to the Eagles offensive play.
The Eagles are now 1-2, and will be playing in the North-South Shootout, in Florida this weekend. This will be against region teams and an indication of how the season may go for Toccoa Falls in the Southern Conference of the NCCAA.
Soccer - Men
The soccer season for the men began in Greenville, SC as the Eagles opened their season against North Greenville College. The score was 5- 0, in favor of North Greenville, but was certainly not an indication of the game the Eagles played Saturday afternoon.
Playing without one of Toccoa Falls’ key players, Jake Warren, the Eagles played well in their first game of the season and the coaches were not entirely disappointed in the effort. Defensively the Eagles gave up scores, but Coach Vena believes TFC played well at that defensive end of the field, against an aggressive North Greenville team. The defensive unit, made-up of Daniel Greenfield, Alex Kerr, Eric Bill and Pete Yang, had no rest time as these men played the entire game. With North Greenfield assuming most of the clock at the offensive end, the pressure on the defense was intense, yet these men handled it well and will be a stronger unit as a result.
The half-time score was 3-0, with early mistakes by the Eagles and new players adjusting to each other, TFC was still not out of game at this point. The second half was played even until the last 16 minutes when Greenville scored two more goals.
Toccoa Falls had two great chances to score as Sam Hamilton hit the crossbar on his shot and Blake Wasson had a shot just wide of the goal. These opportunities will come again during the season with what the Eagles hope will bring about scores instead of near misses.
The coaches are not at all discouraged with the game as they continue to teach a new system which they feel will take this year’s team to the level TFC has not reached for sometime. It will take time, but they believe with the new talent and depth of this year’s squad the results will be worth the wait. In the meantime the Eagles will continue to improve and hopefully see their plans turn into wins for TFC.
Next game for the men is scheduled for 6:00 PM on Saturday, September 6th at Toccoa Falls College against conference rival, Southeastern University. Admission is free for all home soccer games, excluding region playoffs.
