Nancy Jo Tennis Tournament in Toccoa, GA

I have had the most fun this spring playing tennis with my sons. As I get a little older and slower it’s nice to still have a sport to compete in. My Rugby days have long gone the way of short shorts in the NBA.

If you still enjoy competitive tennis let me encourage you to participate in the 7th annual Nancy Jo Charity Tennis Tournament – June 6th – 8th in Toccoa.

Players of all ages and skill level are encouraged to sign up. The Deadline to get a T-shirt is this Friday and the registration deadline is May 30th.

For registration forms or more information visit http://www.nancyjotennis.com/

And if you see a man in his forties with the agility of Andre Agassi, the serve of Pete Sampras, and the passion of Jimmy Connors… that won’t be me.

If you have an event you would like to let the community know about just email us datebook@myfavoritestation.net

Modern Israel became a nation on May 14, 1948. 60 years later the eyes of the world are focused on the Middle East, the epicenter of the dramatic events that are shaping our world and shaking our future. Listen to Joel Rosenberg, Skip Heitzig, Chuck Smith, and Peter Goss answer these questions:

*Why does the Iranian president want to wipe Israel off the map?
*Will there be another Lebanon war and will Syria join in?
*Why is Russia arming Iran?
*Does a 2,500 year old prophecy really foretell the rise of a Russian-Iranian alliance against *Israel in "the last days"?
*How can Christians bless Israel and her neighbors at this moment in history?

Prince Caspian, the Movie

Prince Caspian hits theaters all over the United States today, and Christians from coast to coast are excited. Faith is a central theme. There are a lot of spiritual lessons that can be learned, a lot of family discussions that can be started.

The important thing to remember about Prince Caspian is that there are a number of battle scenes. Before you take your younger children, it would probably help you a great deal to read what the Focus on the Family site Plugged In Online has to say about it.

If you and your family see Prince Caspian over the weekend, we hope you'll let us know and share your review.

New Music Spotlight

This weekends "New Music Spotlight" features fresh new music from:

Your Help is Needed in Myanmar

Our ministry partners at World Vision are addressing the emotional and physical needs of children impacted by Cyclone Nargis by setting up safe play places where they can regain a sense of normality. Some half a million of those affected by the killer storm are estimated to be children.

The aid agency is rolling out 37 Child-Friendly Spaces in and around Yangon to help children cope with devastating consequences of the disaster; many children have been left orphaned, injured or vulnerable to disease. World Vision’s priority is to ensure all children are safe and to support their recovery.

Thousands of the estimated 500,000 children affected will be able to play games, gain informal education and talk about their experiences in a caring and supportive environment facilitated by trained World Vision volunteers.

A Look at Modern Day Israel on Focus On The Family

More than 3,000 years ago, God made a promise to the children of Israel: "Even if you have been banished to the most distant land under the heavens, from there the Lord your God will gather you and bring you back" (Deuteronomy 30:4). Sixty years ago this week, that promise came to pass.

TODAY'S BROADCAST will be heard at 11:30 AM & 8 PM on WRAF

A Look at Modern-Day Israel (Part 1 of 2) - Tom Doyle and Joel RosenbergMany Jews and Christians say biblical prophecy was fulfilled when the nation of Israel was reborn on May 14, 1948 - some 1,900 years after the Jewish people were displaced from what the Old Testament describes as their God-given homeland. This week, Israel celebrates its 60th anniversary as a modern-day nation, and today's broadcast recognizes this historic milestone. Listen in as Dr. James Dobson discusses the biblical significance of Israel's restoration with bestselling author Joel Rosenberg and Middle East expert Tom Doyle. Our guests also examine the threats facing the Jewish state and the condition of the Christian church in the surrounding regions.

"The fact that there's [still] a Jew on the planet, the fact that Israel is in the news, means that there's a God who keeps His promises ... It's only the God of the Bible [who] ever said Israel would become a country again; [the Bible] is the only document in human history that said this would happen."- Joel Rosenberg

WRAF Sports Update

Hello Rob Wegman here and it’s time for the WRAF Sports Update.

Two NBA teams that grossly underachieved this season are both vying for the services of Mike D’Antoni, whose Phoenix Suns teams have arguably been the biggest underachievers of the past decade. Chicago appears to be D’Antoni’s top choice but New York is the only team that has made an offer so far. One source referred to their offer as “staggering” and it would likely put him among the top two or three highest paid coaches in the league. It remains to be seen whether Chicago is willing to make a similar proposal in order to get their man.

And with their backs against the wall against Los Angeles tonight, the Utah Jazz will attempt to duplicate the Game 3 performance of San Antonio, who fought off New Orleans last night to avoid falling behind 3 games to none. The Spurs were able to take advantage of playing on their home court thanks to a high-powered offensive attack that had missing in the first two games. Utah, the league’s best home team during the regular season, will need a similar offensive resurgence this evening if they are going to contend with Kobe Bryant and company.

That’s your afternoon sports update sponsored by Toccoa Falls College. I regret to announce that this has been my final sports update ever, as I will be graduating a week from tomorrow and have finals next week. I hope you’ve enjoyed listening over the past year and a half as much as I’ve enjoyed talking.

WRAF Sports Update

Hello Rob Wegman here and it’s time for the WRAF Sports Update.

After 6 years as general manager of the Atlanta Hawks, Billy Knight has announced that he is resigning. Despite being a part of the first Hawks team to make the playoffs since 1999, Knight said he just feels it is time to take a break. His resignation is effective as of July 1 and although he clashed with ownership over the potential firing of coach Mike Woodson during the season, both sides are saying that had nothing to do with this decision. In fact, one of the owners specifically stated that this came as a surprise so they do not even have a list of potential replacements in mind.

And as for those teams still in the 2008 NBA playoffs, a pair of games tonight provides us with an immediate opportunity to forget all about last night’s Cavs-Celtics debacle. The Magic return to Orlando down 2 games to none and must win Game 3 to make it a series. Meanwhile, Kobe Bryant will lead the Lakers in a quest to take a 2-0 lead of their own tonight against Utah in his first game since winning the MVP award.

That’s your afternoon sports update sponsored by Toccoa Falls College. Rumor has it there are other sports going on right now but until the NBA crowns a champion I don’t see why that matters. The NBA… where “what is this baseball you speak of?” happens.

WRAF Sports Update

Hello Rob Wegman here and it’s time for the WRAF Sports Update.

Despite the fact that he has been widely considered the best player in the NBA for the past five years, Kobe Bryant has never won the MVP award. However, that is about to change as the Lakers are holding a press conference at this very moment for the purpose of announcing that he is the 2008 recipient. Kobe beat out heavy competition from the likes of Chris Paul, LeBron James, and Kevin Garnett to earn the award and he is averaging over 34 points per game so far in this year’s playoffs. Bryant is expected to receive the trophy from commissioner David Stern before tomorrow night’s game against Utah. The Lakers will be looking to take a 2-0 series lead over the Jazz following Kobe’s ceremony.

And a couple of teams have already taken 2-0 series leads as a result of last night’s NBA action. Chris Paul again led the Hornets to a dominant victory over the Spurs and the Pistons were able to take care of the Magic despite a huge game from Dwight Howard. The fourth second round series gets underway tonight, as LeBron James and the Cavs head to Boston for the first two games of their series with the Celtics. Boston was pushed to the edge by Atlanta and just finished that series, so fatigue could be an issue in Game 1.

That’s your afternoon sports update sponsored by Toccoa Falls College, where we’ve got some playoff intrigue of our won with the onset of the intramural softball postseason. A champion will be crowned on Thursday so the window is closing quickly on your chance to catch this bit of May Madness.

WRAF Presents Radio Theatre's "Prince Caspian"

On Sunday, May 18, Toccoa Falls Radio and Focus On The Family Radio Theatre presents
"Prince Caspian" in its entirety from 1 PM - 5 PM. Listen online right here.

Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy are suddenly transported from an English train station to an island in the world of Narnia. Why they've been shifted so dramatically isn't made clear at first, but they soon learn they're to play an important role in the battle between a young Prince who is heir to the Narnian throne and his devious Uncle who has usurped it.

With the help of Trumpkin the Dwarf and many other memorable characters, the four children rush to the aid of Prince Caspian and learn a great deal about faith along the way.

It's interesting to note that the original title of Prince Caspian was Drawn Into Narnia. Lewis wanted the reader to get the idea of being pulled into another world. He had observed that in so many fantasy stories, it seemed as if characters were summoned by magic - and the stories were told from the point of view of the magician, or the one who had done the summoning.

Lewis then wondered what it would be like to be on the receiving end of the summons - to suddenly be pulled from our world into another world. That was the beginning of the idea for Prince Caspian. And, since it was our heroes and heroines from The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe who were "summoned," a theme of return became a key part of the story.

Lewis didn't look at a return in the obvious physical sense, though. He went deeper to consider a restoration - a restoration of those things that are true - true life, true leadership and, mostly, true faith. Prince Caspian tackles that idea - and broader themes of the battle between good and evil, spiritual obedience and discernment, and, ultimately, joy - a festive joy when what was wrong has been put right again.

Of course, one could argue that these are themes that pervade all of The Chronicles of Narnia. But no more so than in this marvelous story of Prince Caspian: The Return To Narnia.

WRAF Sports Update

Hello Rob Wegman here and it’s time for the WRAF Sports Update.

With the Falcons in full-blown rebuilding mode and the Braves sputtering out of the gates, over the past couple weeks the Hawks have adopted the mantle of providing Atlanta with a measure of hope and excitement. Granted they bowed out of the first round of the playoffs yesterday in a less-than-flattering manner but nobody thought they would even make it to a Game 7 when the series started. The young Hawks took care of business in all 3 home games and put a scare into a 66-win Celtic team with its eyes on the NBA Championship. A promising core and a renewed commitment to winning mean that Atlanta is a team on the rise and their showing against Boston is yet another step in their ongoing ascension.

And the NBA playoffs are in fact continuing even though the Hawks have been eliminated. Tonight a pair of 2 seeds look to duplicate impressive Game 1 performances and take 2-0 series leads at home. Detroit and New Orleans each won their second round openers by 19 points, but Orlando and San Antonio are too good to roll over like that again, so this evening’s action promises to be highly competitive. Nothing cures a case of the Mondays like an NBA playoff doubleheader.

That’s your afternoon sports update sponsored by Toccoa Falls College. The NHL playoffs are down to the final four, thanks to victories by Pittsburgh and Dallas yesterday. The Penguins and Stars join the Flyers and Red Wings in the semi-finals and I can say with 94% certainty that all of this matters to someone.

WRAF Sports Update

Hello Rob Wegman here and it’s time for the WRAF Sports Update.

With five teams already in the second round of the NBA playoffs, the final three spots could be filled tonight depending on the outcomes of a trio of Game 6 match-ups. Cleveland, Boston, and Utah all lead their series 3-2 heading into this evening’s action and they will attempt to finish off Washington, Atlanta, and Houston respectively. The Hawks and Wizards will have the opportunity to defend their home courts, while the Rockets must go on the road and win in Utah in order to force a Game 7.

And the Georgia Bulldogs’ road to the 2008 SEC title just got a little easier, thanks to the dismissal of quarterback Ryan Perrilloux from defending national champion LSU. The troubled QB’s latest transgression was a failed drug test but Perrilloux has had a number of incidents during his time with the Tigers. Jarrett Lee and Andrew Hatch split time at quarterback when Perrilloux sat out the spring game and the two of them will now be competing for the starting job.

That’s your afternoon sports update sponsored by Toccoa Falls College. The Indiana Hoosiers are down to 8 scholarship players and only 3 returnees following the departures of 4 more players recently. Anyone with eligibility left and a desire to play Division 1 college basketball is encouraged to contact coach Tom Crean at 1-800-NEED-HELP.

WRAF Sports Update

Hello Rob Wegman here and it’s time for the WRAF Sports Update.

The Atlanta Braves’ pitching staff continues to be decimated by injury but in just a couple of weeks it could be getting a considerable boost in the bullpen. John Smoltz, who just recently went on the DL with a right shoulder injury, told the AJC that when he gets healthy and returns to the team it will likely be as a reliever. And it might not just be a temporary thing either as Smoltz says, “I am planning on coming back as a reliever first, and more than likely for the rest of this year.” Bobby Cox does not seem sold on the idea but if the injury limits Smoltz to just an inning or two at a time, he may not have a choice. The 40-year old right-hander is not eligible to come off the DL for another couple weeks so Cox still has some time to make a decision.

And the college football Hall of Fame announced its Class of 2008 today, a group headlined by Troy Aikman, Billy Cannon, and Lou Holtz. The 15-member class will be officially inducted in December and enshrined in the summer of 2009 at the Hall of Fame in South, Indiana. Other notable members of the class include Don McPherson, Jay Novacek, and Thurman Thomas.

That’s your afternoon sports update sponsored by Toccoa Falls College. Only one playoff game on the docket tonight, but it’s a big one between the Pistons and the Sixers. Detroit can close out the series in 6 with a victory on the road or Philadelphia can push it to a seventh game by capitalizing on home court advantage. Either way, it’s must-see tv.
