Solid Pro-Life Advocate Selected as McCain Running Mate

Governor Sarah Palin (R-AK) Confirmed as VP Choice

Life Issues Institute is pleased to comment on Senator John McCain’s choice for his vice presidential running mate. After a morning of swirling speculation, McCain’s campaign confirmed Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as the republican vice presidential candidate for 2008. Governor Sarah Palin is Alaska’s first female governor, the mother of five — and at 44 is Alaska’s youngest chief executive. Governor Palin is also considered a rising star in the Republican Party and known for her strong pro-life stand.

Executive Director of Life Issues Institute, Bradley Mattes, said this about the selection, “Senator McCain made the best choice possible for a vice presidential running mate. Governor Palin is a rock-solid pro-life advocate for the unborn.”

Dr. Willke, President of Life Issues Institute, continued, “Governor Sarah Palin, not only decided to give birth to her fifth child recently knowing that ‘Trig’ had Down syndrome; she used the event to emphatically speak out for life. As a woman, independent Republican, strong pro-lifer and a fresh face, she will certainly help the McCain ticket.”

Welcoming their child, Governor Palin and her family expressed their joy, “Trig is beautiful and already adored by us. We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives. We have faith that every baby is created for good purpose and has potential to make this world a better place. We are truly blessed.”

We compliment Senator McCain for a wise and refreshing choice for his running mate.

Life Issues Institute is dedicated to changing hearts and minds of millions of people through education. Organizations and individuals around the world depend upon Life Issues Institute to provide the latest information and effective tools to protect innocent human life from womb to tomb.

Long-running Hoax Resurfaces

Petition 2493, originally known as Madalyn Murray O’Hair’s Religious Petition, has resurfaced ? again!

This new round of the hoax erroneously states that an organization has been granted a federal hearing by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in Washington, D.C. “to remove Joel Osteen, Joyce Meyer, A.R. Bernard, TD Jakes, and other pastors from the airwaves.” It goes on to say that Petition 2493 would “ultimately pave the way to stop the reading of the Gospel of our Lord and Savior on the airwaves of America” and that this “group is also campaigning to remove all Christmas programs and Christmas carols from public schools.” The e-mail further states that “we are praying for at least 1 million signatures.” Among many other pleas to “stand up for your religious freedom” and unite as Christians, the e-mail further tries to legitimize its contents by using Dr. James Dobson’s name, stating that he is going to appear on CNBC to urge every Christian to get involved. It then asks the recipient to add their name to the list of previous signers and forward the e-mail. Or, if the recipient is not “comfortable” with signing the petition and forwarding, it asks the person to return it to the sender. Once all 1 million signatures are obtained, the e-mail asks the last signer to forward it to a particular name and e-mail address.

The contents of such an e-mail are false and have been perpetuated for the past 30+ years using different variations of the “threat” and different names, but the originator seems to particularly like using Dr. Dobson’s name the last few years and usually does include the petition number (but not always).

For the truth, visit the following links to the FCC, NRB, and Focus on the Family, and please... pass it along:

Patriot Golf Day 2008

The second Patriot Golf Day will be held at participating golf facilities across the country August 29 – Sept. 1. Public golf courses will request a minimum of $1 for each green fee they process, while private facilities will ask patrons to contribute donations to the Folds of Honors Foundation (http://www.foldsofhonor.org/). The Folds of Honor Foundation provides educational scholarships to families of those who have become disabled or lost their lives in the line of duty.

The inaugural Patriot Golf Day, inspired by Major Dan Rooney, a PGA Professional and USGA member from Broken Arrow, Okla., was held Sept. 1, 2007, and has resulted in donations of more than $1.1 million to support the families of military service members who have been injured or perished in the line of duty. Contributions were received from more than 3,200 golf facilities last year.

Patriot Golf Day is jointly supported by the PGA of America and the United States Golf Association and has also garnered tremendous support from many of the country’s leading golf television personalities, manufacturers, media outlets and organizations.

For more information on Patriot Golf Day, including the most updated list of participating courses (click on “Find a Course”), please visit http://www.patriotgolfday.com/.

Sweet Blueberries, Sweet Situation

Sidney Roland says his blueberries are a “win, win, win situation.”

People interested in picking their own blueberries win because they can buy a gallon of pesticide-free blueberries for $4.

The American Belarussian Relief Organization, in which Roland and his family are involved, wins because all proceeds go to that group. The ABRO brings Belarusian children to the U.S. for six weeks every summer so they can get away from the effects of radiation from the Chernobyl nuclear accident.

And Roland wins, because he knows the seven acres of blueberries won’t go to waste, and he knows that one of his favorite charities will be partially funded.

The Rolands have owned the farm for about 20 years, and they have always offered the blueberries for free to whoever wanted to come pick them. About five years ago, Roland decided to charge a little for them, as a fundraiser for ABRO.

“We get as many as 14 kids that come [from Belarus] every year,” he says. “We feed them real good and healthy food because everything’s still contaminated over there. The airplane tickets [for the children] were $1,900 this year and the interpreter’s was $2,400.”

Host families take the children on trips and to local doctors while they are here, so they depend on donations to help pay for their stay.

Roland still has “thousands of gallons” of blueberries left on his bushes, though hundreds of people have strolled through the farm, picking blueberries as they go. Recently, he hosted a homeschool group of about 50 students and their mothers.

“They picked and I gave them a demonstration how to grow blueberry plants,” he says. Roland says he started with about 100 blueberry plants, but now he probably has more than 200,000, since they propagate themselves with runners. He also sells the plants in the wintertime for $2 per plant, with proceeds going to ABRO.

“They’re like strawberries,” he says. “They put runners on them. You dig the runners up in the wintertime when they’re dormant.”

Though they had no blueberries last year because of the freeze, this year’s crop makes up for that.

“It’s excellent,” he says. “The best we’ve ever had.”

Berries should be available for picking until sometime in September, Roland says.

Sidney Roland’s Blueberry Farm is located on Sidney Roland Road in the Fairview Community, off Highway 105 and Riverbend Road.

By KIMBERLY BROWN - The Northeast Georgian, Aug. 12

DTV revisited

BIG thanks to Mike Shelley of Praise in the Morning, for suggesting that I revisit the issue of DTV or Digital Television.

What Is Digital Television?
According to http://www.dtv.gov/, Digital Television (DTV) is an advanced broadcasting technology that will transform your television viewing experience. DTV enables broadcasters to offer television with better picture and sound quality. It can also offer multiple programming choices, called multicasting, and interactive capabilities.

What are some other benefits to converting to DTV?
Converting to DTV also will free up parts of the scarce and valuable broadcast spectrum. Those portions of the spectrum can then be used for other important services, such as public and safety services (police and fire departments, emergency rescue), and advanced wireless services.
When will the change over happen? February 17, 2009

What Do I need to do to be ready for the change over?

Purchase an HDTV, Prices range from $250-$2,500, depending on screen resolution and size, or purchase an analog-to-DTV converter set top box. Prices averages around $60.
According to www.dtv2009.gov/docs/Wilmington_Fact_Sheet_en.pdf , The Federal Government is offering U.S. households up to two $40 coupons to help with the cost of certified TV converter boxes. A converter box is a one-time purchase that will allow your analog TV to continue to work. According to Praise in the morning Host, Mike Shelley, the coupon is in the form of a debit card which is valid for 90 days.

Can I still use my analog TV after Feb 17, 2009?
Yes, IF you have Cable or Satellite TV service. You can still use analog TV’s to watch DVD or play Video Games as well. For more information go to http://www.dtv.gov/

Steven Curtis Chapman gave an incredible interview on Good Morning America. Here's part of what he said to his son as he jumped into his car to rush to the hospital immediately after the accident that took his daughter's life:

"I really don't remember this," he said about the moments directly following the accident. "It was, actually, Dave -- Uncle Dave that told me. He said, 'You rolled the window down and just, very loudly yelled really... with as much strength as you could muster and just said, 'Will Franklin, your father loves you.'"

We enoucourage you to read the entire article and view the video. You can do so by clicking here.

'Major Discovery' Primed To Unleash Solar Revolution: Scientists Mimic Essence Of Plants' Energy Storage System

Here's the story Steve Gimbert mentioned on The Road Home

ScienceDaily (Aug. 1, 2008) — In a revolutionary leap that could transform solar power from a marginal, boutique alternative into a mainstream energy source, MIT researchers have overcome a major barrier to large-scale solar power: storing energy for use when the sun doesn't shine.

Steven Curtis Chapman's Poignant Message

"I've walked the valley of death's shadow

so deep and dark that I could barely breathe.

I've had to let go of more than I could bear and

I've questioned everything that I believe.

Still even here in this great darkness

a comfort and a hope comes breaking through

as I can say in life or death

God we belong to you." - Steven Curtis Chapman

Quartermans to Receive Red Cross Award

Toccoa Falls, GA – Bill and Cyd Quarterman, counseling faculty at Toccoa Falls College, will receive the Life Saving Merit Award during the Red Cross banquet in Gainesville on August 19. The award will be presented by Lt. Governor Casey Cagle.

The Quartermans, long-time volunteers of the Red Cross and trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), were able to use their training last June while vacationing on Tybee Island. While walking along the beach the couple heard screams for help. A young boy had drowned and was being pulled out of the water. Bill and Cyd were able to use their training in CPR and were able to resuscitate the young man.

EMS arrived to continue the aid, but the lifesaving skills of Bill Quarterman saved the young 12-year-old’s life. The Quartermans had the opportunity to meet Anthony this past Christmas, and Bill says, “I can’t help but think Anthony has been given another chance at life. I believe we were given a chance as well. A chance to tell the world, ‘Hey, this CPR stuff really works!”
